What is MoCA Testing?
MoCA 2.0 Certification Testing Now Available!
GVIRL has been selected by the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) to be the exclusive authorized lab to execute and manage the MoCA certification program. MoCA is an industry driven standard promoting the networking of digital video and entertainment products throughout the home using the existing coaxial cable. MoCA technology provides the backbone for entertainment networks of multiple wired and wireless products throughout the home, including “triple play” technologies (voice, data and video). Products certified for MoCA 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0 include broadband home routers, high-speed cable modems, and set-top boxes.
Why MoCA Matters

MoCA is an industry-leading mark of quality that benefits cable companies and content providers, as well as consumers. MoCA 2.0 compliance is important because it:
- Lowers the overall cost of maintaining a home network by guaranteeing a level of quality and reducing the need for later upgrades.

What’s Involved with MoCA Testing
Technical highlights of any MoCA 2.0 device include:
- A full-frequency range from 500 MHz to 1650 MHz, allowing devices to accommodate a wide range of pay TV providers and their respective technologies.
- Basic net throughput rates of 400 Mbps; enhanced MAC rates of 800 Mbps. All devices must have turbo modes available at each level and must be capable of achieving net throughput rates of up to 1 Gbps through the use of channel bonding.
- Packet error rates of no more than 1 error per 100 million packets. MoCA devices must deliver an average latency below 3.5 milliseconds, ensuring on-time delivery across all packets and traffic profiles.
- Standard sleep and standby modes to reduce power consumption when not in use.
- Full backwards compatibility and interoperability with earlier MoCA cable devices. All devices sharing a network must be able to continue operating at full speed, even alongside newer products.

MoCA Testing Process
Prior to testing, MoCA manufacturers will run a self-test on their own product and once they feel comfortable with their product’s performance, they’ll submit their device for certification. The latest version of the test plan is available to MoCA members from the Members Site. GVIRL then performs certification according to the test procedures developed and managed by the MoCA Certification Working Group. During certification, MoCA products are subjected to a battery of tests within a controlled environment to ensure the product will interoperate with other certified products from other MoCA members. These procedures have been selected specifically to verify that the product-under-test meets not only the technical specifications (e.g., power, communications, etc.), but also functions correctly with other certified MoCA products currently on the market. Once a device as successfully completed testing, the information will be submitted to the MoCA Alliance for final verification and the issuance of the actual certification.
